Great night…need more events like this in Lancaster

Hopefully we will see more interesting gigs in the Kanteena…although hope Pete enjoyed it….thought he might be grumpy at the end when he threw his guitar…

Peter Doherty & The Puta Madres, O2 Academy Bristol, Bristol - 5th May 2019

Singer-songwriter Peter Doherty is an indie icon. Best known as co-frontman of The Libertines together with Carl Barat, Doherty has also headed up Babyshambles and Peter Doherty and the Puta Madres.

The Libertines formed in 1997 and also included drummer Gary Powell and bassist John Hassall. They have released four albums titled Up the Bracket (2002), The Libertines (2004), Anthems for Doomed Youth (2015) and All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade (2024).

Doherty is renowned for his poetic lyrics and ramshackle style and image. His solo output includes the albums Grace/Wastelands (2009), Hamburg Demonstrations (2016), Peter Doherty & the Puta Madres (2019) and The Fantasy Life of Poetry & Crime (2022).

Artist Bio

There can be few other rock and roll antihero icons born in the last few decades greater than Peter Doherty. The romantic poet has done it all and achieved infamy through a wild life of excess that has seen him spend time in prison, survive doomed romance and divided a nation along the lines of love and hate - all with a guitar in his hands in the name of Albion.

The wild child has electrified a generation with his blistering anarchic live performances and entranced audiences far and wide with his heart breaking tender tunes. The rollercoaster started with the explosion of The Libertines onto the scene, followed by his band of tearaways Babyshambles and his ever enthralling solo and acoustic work.

The early life of Doherty was that of an army brat. Following his father from one barracks to another, he began playing guitar and developed his passion for poetry to such an extent that he won a competition as set by the British Council and was sent on a tour of Russia.

Doherty moved to London to study English at university but left the course after only a year. Remaining in the big city, he moved into a flat with Carl Barât and formed the now infamous relationship that would take the pair further than they dared to dream. The pair were soon joined by John Hassall and Gary Powell to form a band that would draw on the passion of The Clash with the style of The Strokes; The Libertines.

In a chain of events that would mirror the Icarian tragedy, the newfound fame that would accompany the explosive arrival of the band would drag Doherty into dangerous directions. Tensions would prove too much and the founding member would be unceremoniously flung from the band.

This expulsion lead to Doherty forming a new group of urban urchins; Babyshambles. And with their success and continued public animosity with what became the Dirty Pretty Things, it seemed like The Libertines were consigned to rock and roll history.

After many years apart, the hate waned and longing set it. Following six long years, The Libertines became united once again and celebrated their reformation by headlining Leeds and Reading Festivals.
