Working Men's ClubFear Fear

What do you do when you explode out of nowhere, become the coolest band ever and release a record so fucking cool, critics and fans love it alike? Do it all again! Now teenager wunderkind Syd Minsky-Sargeant has just tuned twenty and returned with eagerly awaited second Working Men's Club album Fear Fear and it’s every bit as banging as we hoped it would be.

Inevitably, a coming-of-age album will always come with a certain amount of baggage, as Syd comes to terms with everything from mundanity to his own mortality. But that’s not to say this record is any less ravey as the Todmorden tearaway has gone big on the beats.

The first album was mostly a personal documentation lyrically, this is a blur between personal and a third-person perspective of what was going on. Fear Fear documents the last two years. Yes, there is bleakness – but there is also hope and empathy. I like the contrast of it being happy, uplifting music and really dark lyrics. It’s not a minimal record, certainly compared to the first one. That’s because there’s been a lot more going on that needed to be said.
