If there has been one common thread throughout Paul Weller’s lengthy career, then it is innovation. From his pioneering punk beginnings with The Jam, his unexpected sophisticated pop progression into The Style Council or his solo work which has seen him try his hand at hard rock, folk and even the recent forays into electronica. His continual need to experiment and reinvent himself can also be heard on his new album ‘On Sunset’, released today through Polydor.
Constantly pushing himself, ‘On Sunset’ sees Weller make good use of the abundance of time created by the COVID crisis as the album includes aspects of psyche, soul, funk and many other genres that if tried by anyone less talented would be an embarrassment. Fortunately, Weller just happens to be a dab hand at anything he tries and has produced yet another essential record.
“Once we went into the lockdown I thought, ‘I have to use this time,’ you know I couldn’t just not do anything for six months. I’ve been very lucky that I’ve been able to. Because I would have gone crazy.”
Next year sees the Modfather hit the road for a lengthy tour with dates during March, June and July which sees him promote the new material plus play classic hits from right across his career. Tickets are on sale with Gigantic right now but are going fast so grab yours before the go!
Two years ago, London based riot grrl inspired trio Dream Wife blasted onto the scene with the release of their awesome eponymously titled debut album – forever leaving their mark on indie discos. Now Alice Go (guitar), Rakel Mjöll (lead vocals) and Bella Podpadec (bass) return with a second helping with follow up ‘So When You Gonna…’.
Know for their fiery sound and taking no shit attitude, it’s a slight surprise that some of their second album takes a more chilled direction as heard on summery single ‘Hasta La Vista’, sugary sweet song ‘Temporary’ plus tender tracks ‘U Do U’ and ‘After The Rain’. But if you like it loud and screamy you won’t be disappointed as the title track is bursting with energy as is their killer single ‘Sports’ whilst ‘RH RN’, ‘Validation’ and ‘Homesick’ are those huge empowering songs have that huge Dream Wife pop appeal.
‘So When You Gonna…’ is out today and you can grab a copy on CD + Signed Fanzine, Pink 12” Vinyl + Signed Fanzine and a money saving Bundle including CD, Pink 12” Vinyl, Signed Fanzine and a T Shirt!
