GUN, Barrowland, Glasgow - 9th December 2023

GUN rock the house down

The usual pre Christmas gig from Glasgow’s own GUN : a regular occurrence and as usual the band didn’t disappoint right down to their choice of support. GUN always pick a great support band and this was no exception, with The Godfathers producing a loud, aggressive and flawless performance that got full backing from those that had turned up to see them. The set was peppered with a selection from their ‘Best of’ eg The is War, If I Only Had Time , interspersed with some newer songs from the revamped and re-energised band. Their finish was the stonking Birth School Work Death and that set the scene nicely for the main event. GUN have a new album “Hombres” due for release in April 24, and the set featured tracks from this , all well received, including current single All Fired Up , and their new single due out in January which will feature the Barrowlands Choir in full volume. By the sound of it, this new album is a return to the brilliance of old, with Guiliano “Jools” Gizzi proving once again that when it comes to killer riffs and scorching lead solos he is “ on the Money”. Of course everyone loves her ( Money) which was another in their set, alongside perennial favourites Don’t Say It’s Over, Better Days, Word Up and Steal Your Fire amongst others. An accoustic version of “Taking On The World” had the crowd singing, and the band finished with another crowd favourite ( and frequent closer) Shame On You. This mini tour featured a return to the drum seat for Paul McManus , happily recovered from cancer earlier in the year and boy did he gie those skins ‘laldy’. What a powerhouse performance. Brand new second guitarist Ruaridh MacLennan did a great job - he’s not been in the band long, taking over from Tommy Gentry, but you wouldn’t have known that : things augur well for next year which promises to be another busy year for the boys. Probably one of the best if not THE best of GUN gigs since they reformed ( has it really been more than 10 years since they came back with a vengeance? ) and they show no signs of stopping or resting on their laurels. Dante’s voice was much better ( due to being in good health) compared to some previous Christmas gigs where he has been suffering from the flu and as for the old lady The Barrowlands? …….well 40 years on, from when Simple Minds launched the venue as an addition to the Glasgow scene, replacing in many ways the fondly remembered Apollo, nothing has changed: there’s still a mirror ball, the toilets are basic, the bars plentiful, the posters don’t seem to have been replaced, and it still takes ages to get out the building. And for us ‘auld yins’ 3 hours of standing does havoc to one’s knees. But you only feel the pain once the music has stopped- whilst the action is happening it’s the music that’s the winner. And that of course is how it should be.

Gun first started in Glasgow during 1987 and originally went under the name Blind Allez, and then Phobia before settling on the name.

Through sheer talent and amazing live shows the band were quick to gain the attention of major label A&M Records and were signed to them in 1988 and released their debut album Taking On The World the next year.

Combined with major label backing and playing support for the Rolling Stones on their 1990 European tour, GUN enjoyed massive success. Their album releases included Gallus (1992) and Swagger (1994).

The band split after the 1997 album 0141 632 6326, which was produced by INXS keyboardist Andrew Farriss.

Interest renewed for the band with the release of a compilation album in 2003 entitled The Collection and The River Sessions live album in 2005. The band reunited in 2008 and brought out the two records Popkiller and Break The Silence.

Glaswegian rockers GUN are back with a brand new album, ‘Calton Songs’ released on Cherry Red Records on 14 October 2022 and will be available on Cherry Red-coloured vinyl, CD, cassette and digital. ‘Calton Songs’ is a full-blooded celebration of the band’s career so far with enthusiastic and brand new acoustic reinterpretations of the songs that made their name and took GUN to the four corners of the world. These retooled classics are bolstered by the addition of the single ‘Backstreet Brothers’ which is released 18 May. This is a new and fully electric track that basks in the simple joys of both lives and good times shared, but also brings the GUN story up to date,

‘Calton Songs’ is an album that takes its name from the area of Glasgow where the band grew up, and where they still write their music. This record is about celebrating the road that GUN have taken to reach this point, these new versions of great songs are cut through with un-ironic nostalgia but this is a band with an eye on the horizon for what’s to come, not what’s over their shoulder in the past. ‘Taking On The World’ announced the band to a global audience in 1989 and their next album ‘Gallus’ just marked its 30th anniversary. ‘Calton Songs’ is the latest milestone on this journey and follows-up ‘Favourite Pleasures’ from 2017 which made the top 15, making it their biggest album in almost a quarter of a century, since 1994’s ‘Swagger’.

As Jools Gizzi says, “When the pandemic hit we realised that it was the perfect time to try and counteract the bleakness that was all around. It felt like we couldn’t write anything, or of course tour. Out of that darkness came a desire to completely rework these songs that we know the fans love, and bring a different, stripped down vibe. ‘Better Days’ was the first one to get the treatment, and that really brought all our enthusiasm back and relit the creative fires”. Dante Gizzi added, “It’s ironic that those feelings of negativity led to something so positive, a celebration of our career up to now. It turned into something great, and ‘Backstreet Brothers’ really sums up that unalloyed enthusiasm that has been brought back into the heart of the band”.
