Gruff Rhys gig in Llangollen

We've never been to that venue before (Llangollen Town Hall). Really lovely cosy setting to see such an iconic artist. The room & stage had a school play feel to it. Would definitely go again. Gruff Rhys & his band were excellent.

Gruff Rhys, Town Hall, Llangollen - 7th December 2019

Excellent performance.

Brilliant performance. Good atmosphere. Only negatives was overuse of spotlights on audience - for photosensitive people that causes headaches. I had to turn away several times as a result.

Gruff Rhys , The Rockin' Chair, Wrexham - 7th December 2018

Great to see the consistency

All the bands are great to be fair! GR was his usual, consistent, melodic best. A long set too, which was a bonus.

Gruff Rhys , The Rockin' Chair, Wrexham - 7th December 2018

Enigmatic Welshman Gruff Rhys is a true creative force. Composer, producer, filmmaker and musician; his boundless imagination sees him explore psychedelic realms in art and music. As leader of the wonderfully eccentric Super Furry Animals, they ran parallel with mainstream indie and offered a brilliantly bonkers alternative from the mid-90s and beyond.

Working as a solo artist, he has recorded eight studio albums including latest title Sadness Sets Me Free which drops in 2024.

Artist Bio

Composer, producer, film maker and musician; Gruff Rhys is known for his huge capacity for creativity and psychedelic attitude.

Having first found fame as the enigmatic front of oddball indie band Super Furry Animals, Rhys has also gone on to become a successful solo artist having won the 2011 Welsh Music Prize for his record Hotel Shampoo. He also works as a member of electro-pop group Neon Neon.

His career has seen him record nine studio albums with Super Furry Animals, two with Neon Neon and now five solo records.

Last year saw release of his latest album Babelsberg through Rough Trade.

It's warm and weird, but suddenly no stranger than the world around it.” - Uncut

Babelsberg is, without doubt, one of the finest expressions so far of Rhys's talent.” - MOJO

Gruff Rhys first became his forays into music playing as the drummer for band Emily. He then progressed on to Ffa Coffi Pawb (Everyone’s Coffee Beans) who released three albums with Rhys as the singer. When the band split in 1993 he began what would become Super Furry Animals.

By 2005 Gruff Rhys released his first solo album, Yr Atal Genhedlaeth, having already achieved a degree of mainstream success with Super Furry Animals. His following record releases would include Candylion, Hotel Shampoo, American Interior and his soundtrack album Set Fire To The Stars.

Gruff Rhys has now announced the title of his new album - Pang.

Pang is a Welsh Language pop album with a couple of verses of Zuluand an English title. ‘Pang!’ developed unexpectedly over about 18months. A solo album of songs by Gruff Rhys, produced & mixed by the South African electronic artist Muzi.

Recorded in Cardiff, Wales. The song “Pang!” was mixed by the producer Muziin Cardiff & Johannesburg. Drums by Welsh-American psychedelic warlord Kliph Scurlock, brass by Gavin Fitzjohn and flute and percussion by the engineer Kris Jenkins. Beats, bass &ah’s by Muzi with Gruff on vocals and guitar.

Gruff Rhys explains “Pang! Is a Welsh language song with an English title. It started life as a folk reel and soon expanded into a ‘list’ song, listing various reasons for pangs; hunger, regret, twitter, pain, bad design etc. Using the English word pang in a Welsh language track may appear weird but I suppose it’s like using the French word ‘Magazine’ in an English song. In that it’s slightly pretentious but completely acceptable.”
