When Will Ezra Furman Get The Recognition they Deserve?

Watching Ezra Furman play live is always an inspirational, heart wrenching, uplifting, agonising, joyous experience. Tonight was no different although, if anything, the stripped back punk-doo-wop-protest take that is Furman’s latest album inspired Ezra and the entire band to new heights of pained ecstasy and tortured beauty. It’ll be a crying shame if Ezra Furman doesn’t end up playing stadiums but it’d also be a crying shame if you don’t catch them playing before that happens because up close and personal is where it’s at.

A real treat

Been listening to Ezra for last few years. Always thought could be really good live and he is. I only knew half of the songs as not waded into the back catalogue but enjoyed every one on the set list. A real range of music but always that hard-hitting content with humour twist in the lyrics. Delivery live was well up to the mark in terms of sound though the energy (and boiler suits?) of other band members didn't add much to the show for me personally. I don't know much about Ezra as an artist but as I watched I couldnt put him into any category - he's full of contradictions especially his manner v the sound. The last of the night could have been punk from 1978 when it seemed the drummer was finally let off his leash - which may be a credit to him playing his part for the rest of the show. Venue good as always. It was a full crowd but you weren't jammed in. Sound OK to.

So good I am going twice

Exceeded all my expectations, Ezra was amazing and so were the band. Immediately bought tickets for All Points East London for Sunday. Can’t wait.

Ezra Furman, Foundry, Sheffield - 30th May 2019

Outstanding

@ezrafurman is a proper, give it everything, edge of his pants performance rock star. My third time seeing him and everything I hoped for my young niece/nephew’s first indoor gig. Great dress!

Ezra Furman, Rescue Rooms, Nottingham - 6th July 2017

Art-pop and indie-rock songwriter Ezra Furman enjoys the dedicated support of a cult following. Formally heading up Ezra Furman and the Harpoons, she continued as a solo performer after the band ended in 2011.

Furman has gone on to release her solo records Day of the Dog (2013), Perpetual Motion People (2015), Transangelic Exodus (2018) and All of Us Flames (2022).

Artist Bio

Crossing between love, gender, sexuality and religion, and singing in solidarity with the innocent, persecuted, oppressed and threatened; Ezra Furman provides a soundtrack for the current fear and loathing in America like no other.

A wildly intelligent, phenomenal live performer and deft lyricist Ezra made three albums with his band The Harpoons, then a crowdfunded solo record before he released Day of the Dog in late 2013 and followed it up with critically acclaimed record Perpetual Motion People in 2015 " both made with his band The Boyfriends. Selling out London’s Roundhouse in 2016, performing at Jools Holland and playing Coachella in 2017 has established them as a popular exciting and energetic live act. Now he returns with Transangelic Exodus and a “new” band The Visions.

His second album for Bella Union is a new landmark for the American singer-songwriter: “not a concept record, but almost a novel, or a cluster of stories on a theme, a combination of fiction and a half-true memoir,” according to its author. “A personal companion for a paranoid road trip. A queer outlaw saga.” Perfect for an artist always on the move, always evolving. Furman’s awesome third album is titled Mysterious Power.

He now forms his band with no name for the release of his new album - 12 Nudes;

“This is our punk record,” says Ezra Furman, introducing his new album 12 Nudes, yet another incendiary and inspiring classic from the singer/ songwriter/ guitarist/bandleader. “We made it in Oakland, quickly. We drank and smoked. Then we made the loud parts louder. I hurt my voice screaming. This was back in 2018, when things were bad in the world. The songs are naked with nothing to hide.”
