Finnish prog-metal quartet WHEEL are an intense fusion of crushing riffs and punishing drums.

The Helsinki-based band consists of James Lascelles (vocals, guitar), Santeri Saksala (drums), Aki 'Conan' Virta (bass) and Jussi Turunen (lead guitar).

They have released the albums Moving Backwards (2019) and Resident Human (2021).

Artist Bio

Progressive metallers Wheel have announced a headline tour of the UK in February, supporting the release of their debut album Moving Backwards released earlier this year via Odyssey Music Network.

The tour will see the band travel all over the country on their first ever headline run, including stops in Glasgow, Manchester and London.

Lead singer and guitarist James Lascelles comments, “Having been away from the UK for 10 years it's exciting for me to go back with Wheel and to play longer sets than we have managed on previous tours. This tour is certainly going to be special and nobody should miss out on this!”

Their remarkable debut album Moving Backwards features the singles ‘Where The Pieces Lie’ and their debut single ‘Vultures’, the latter of which has amassed over 1,250,000 streams on Spotify alone.

Following the release of two EPs, The Path (2017) and The Divide (2018), the album sees the band showcasing their distinctive and time-defying collage of progressive rock, grunge and film score that twists and turns into Tool-esque masterpieces.

In addition to its sonic ambition, the subject matter of the album is also complex and undeniably important. Already having dissected the media’s portrayal of the nightmarish inhumanities of the Syrian refugee crisis on early single ‘Please’, they have established themselves as a group very much unafraid to speak out. On Moving Backwards, they turn their gaze to censorship and institutionalised mind control - an epidemic that is sweeping the world.

“Censorship in academia is becoming increasingly common,” explains frontman James Lascelles. “If it continues, filtering out into films, comedy and music - we’ll end up in a place where nobody can say anything anymore. The lyrics for ‘Tyrant’, with lines like “silence will become the banner” are heralding what’s to come. On this album, rather than looking at an environmental or economic dystopia, we’re anticipating more of a social one.”

Armed with an expansive and mind-melting debut album, the quartet are set to stun UK audiences with their intricate prog epics, starting off their 2020 in the best way possible.
