Soul II Soul, Stockton Globe, Stockton-on-Tees - 25th November 2023

Great Main Act, BUT

Soul to Soul were brilliant. But after doors opened at 7.30, the main act did not start until 9. The support act was a DJ who failed to energise a large section of the audience, half of whom stayed in the foyer until he had finished. He hardly spoke, apart from having a conversation with someone in the front row.

AMAZING!

I loved everything about the concert! No inappropriate language. Just the way I like it! I went to see Soul 11 Soul back in the early 90's. This was even better 2nd time around! I would have gone again, if they were still performing in Sheffield.

Artist Bio

Soul II Soul was first started by Trevor Beresford Romeo, AKA Jazzie B, initially under the name Jah Rico running sound systems in London clubs playing dub and reggae in clubs and parties around North London.
He experimented with the sound in the late seventies and with the addition of more members the music developed more into soul and funk. Culminating in the release of a dub plate in 1988 titled Fairplay under the name we all recognise today.

Fairplay may have been an underground hit but still failed to break the top 40. However, it still grabbed label interest securing a contract with Virgin Records who were quick to see the potential and the appeal to a larger audience.

Commercial success was not far behind as the group produced such massive hit singles as Keep On Moving, Joy, Get A Life, A Dream’s A Dream and, of course, Back To Live (However Do You Want Me).

To date, they have sold 10 million albums worldwide, appeared on over 200 compilation albums and have performed in more than 20 countries at some of the world’s most prestigious venues including Wembley.

The band’s achievements have been well recognised, being the winner of two Grammy Awards as well as being nominated for five Brit Awards, twice of which has been in the category of Best British Band, and the PRS Music Heritage Award with a plague erected on the site of their first live performance in Brixton. Jazzie has also won the Ivor Novello Award for Inspiration in 2008 for being “the man who gave black British music a soul of its own”.

Today, the band includes Jazzie B on the turntables and sharing vocals with Caron Wheeler.
