Having now released thirteen albums in the space of a career that has lasted thirty four years and showing no creative exhaustion, it’s hard to imagine that Welsh firebrands Manic Street Preachers were in a relevant precarious position in 1993. The band had exploded onto the scene in an eruption of hyperbole claiming their debut album ‘Generation Terrorists’ would sell 16 million copies, making them more iconic than The Sex Pistols and Guns N’ Roses and then split up. When this didn’t turn out exactly how they expected, they hurriedly rushed into the studio and returned with a hard rock inspired follow up record ‘Gold Against The Soul’ which they were never entirely happy with despite being a firm fan favourite ever since its release.
Following the rediscovery of archive material, the Manics have braved a revisiting of the second LP they love to hate, though cherished by their fan community. It’s prompted the release of a new remastered deluxe edition complete with all B-sides, remixes, live performances and never before heard demos. The new deluxe edition of ‘Gold Against The Soul’ is packaged in a gorgeous 120 page A4 book containing previously unused promo shots and tour photographs from their trusted collaborator Mitch Ikeda. ‘Gold Against The Soul’ is re-released today on Deluxe Double CD + 120 Page Book, Vinyl plus a money saving Bundle of both!
Innovative and inventive, Manchester trio GoGo Penguin are frequently tagged with the title of ‘The Radiohead of British Jazz’. As flattering as the nickname is, it still doesn’t do justice to just how remarkable and truly original their music is as once again exhibited on their new eponymously titled album.
Yet another remarkable record following on from their Mercury Award nominated 2014 album ‘v2.0’, this new LP again draws on the sort of experimental electronica typically heard on Warp Records, their free form jazz spurn vocals in favour of true sonic expression.
Savages singer Jehnny Beth strikes out on her own with this new revealing solo album ‘To Love Is To Live’. Channelling the last years of Bowie, the record is clearly inspired by ‘Blackstar’ with its unfettered exploration of jazz, electronica and the darkest side of rock as she explores the unsettling aspects of herself and the human condition.
Beth takes the opportunity to call a favour from some of her famous friends, including Peaky Blinders star actor Cillian Murphy whose gravelly tones are perfect for spoken word track ‘A Place Above’ plus Bristolian singer/ranter Joe Talbot who provides guest vocals on ‘How Could You’.
‘To Love Is To Live’ is out now on CD, White Vinyl and standard Vinyl. Plus, there is a bundle including Vinyl + Bonus Live CD!
