Liverpool-Born singer songwriter Kathryn Williams has been a popular face on the British alternative folk circuit for over a decade. Since her second album, Little Black Numbers received a Mercury Music Prize nomination at the turn of the millennium, she’s steadily built an impressive body of work and a dedicated army of fans.
If you count yourself amongst this number, then it’s time to celebrate as this year she’s going on tour and playing a variety of venues around the country, including the Folk House in Bristol on 4th July. Get your tickets to this upcoming Kathryn Williams Concert right here on Gigantic.
Since those early successes, Williams has located to Newcastle, and now has ten albums to her name, including most recently 2013’s Crown Electric, 2012’s The Pond, and 2010’s The Quickening. But as with many folk artists, her career started out rather more humbly, with an acoustic guitar, a head full of songs and a string of regular performances at local pubs and other venues.
At her gigs she began offering fans self-produced CDs of her music, and with these selling like the proverbial hot cakes, she decided to establish her own record label. So Caw Records was born and her impressive recording career had begun. Though you might not see her gracing the cover of NME or selling out the O2 Arena, she has had plenty of successes along the way, including reaching number 70 in the UK Album Chart with her Mercury nominated second album, and number 56 with the following year’s Old Low Light.
Bristol’s Folk House promises a small intimate setting to enjoy hearing the now veteran folk singer songwriter strip it back down to basics with an acoustic guitar and her memorable sugar-sweet voice. An adult education centre by day, at night the community funded venue regularly hosts live music.
With a large body of material to draw on, this string of Kathryn Williams tour dates is sure to cover a decent selection of her folksy acoustic compositions spanning the years, and there will perhaps also be some new material to look forward to. Having recently entered her forties and now a mother to two, expect a Kathryn Williams concert with a renewed sense of maturity, but with all the soulful folk stylings that fans have come to expect.
