Band practice

Hahahahaha this is what gigs should be. Halfway through admitting you have no setlist, asking the audience for recommendations and then admitting you don’t know your own song, with the added bonus of the handing out instruments and saw blades to the audience. Wasn’t the most intense gig, but definitely one of the best I’ve been to

Crywank are a three-piece DIY folk band from Manchester, England. They focus mostly on sad songs.

Crywank started in 2009 with James Clayton attempting to do some folk-punk influenced acoustic music with no previous experience playing guitar. The first album "James is going to die soon" was inspired by a painful break up. James stated that "I wrote these songs out of frustration and sadness and they ended up making me feel a lot better, I hope they have a similar effect on you".

In 2012 Crywank released his second album 'Narcissist On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown'. Described as "a collection of paranoid songs mostly about me trying to understand my own sadness along with the concept of sadness as a whole. It was fuelled by self-help books and pot. "

In late 2012 Dan Watson joined Crywank on percussion, and in early 2013 they released tour demos for their third album 'Tomorrow Is Nearly Yesterday And Everyday Is Stupid' which was released in October 2013.

In 2014 Tom Connolly joined on bass, Crywank is now a full band. James continues solo recordings under the name JC and The Nobodies. The name Crywank comes from a nickname a friend gave James due to his over-the-top displays of sadness. His Mum tells her friends he's called 'Tearjerk'.

As ever, we only have limited stocks of Crywank concert tickets being made available by the event organisers so you will have to ensure you book as soon as they are released or else it is highly likely you will miss out. With more essential gig tickets being added everyday plus an excellent customer services team on hand to help with every enquiry, award winning ticket vendor Gigantic should always be your first call whenever you are booking for your big night out.

Artist Bio

Starting in Manchester in 2009 by Jay Clayton as a solo project despite having no previous experience playing the guitar, Crywank started the night Clayton learnt their first two chords and wrote the songs (Welcome to Castle Irwell and Thomas Saunders Gang Chant).
Lyrically focusing on the end of their first relationship and musically heavily influenced by American folk punk and anti-folk, their first album ‘James is Going To Die Soon’ became a cult favourite on the internet for its charm and many flaws.

After their first release, Crywank began to play with and subvert the role of the singer-songwriter. Shifting the focus from self-pity to self-criticism and fluctuating from hard-hitting confessionals to tongue-in-cheek deconstructions resulted in Crywank’s ‘sad-but-fun’ sound. Dan Watson (ex-GNOD, Denim & Leather, Prangers) joined the band in 2012 on percussion and began to implement approaches and influences not often seen within ‘anti-folk’, at points going into d-beat and blast-beats.

Crywank have since self-released eight records and have amassed a dedicated following online. Despite being self-managed, and unsigned and their name getting in the way of radio play or press coverage, Crywank have had over 100 million streams and have toured internationally. Crywank announced they would be breaking up in July 2020 following a world tour, but this was cut short after five continents due to the Covid-19 pandemic. After two years of hiatus and an impromptu solo album following a house fire, Crywank are back to finish their tour performing around North America And Europe.
