Artist Bio

Already friends since school, the band was formally named Topanga after the character in the Disney series Boy Meets World until they learnt that the series was undergoing a reboot and changed their name shortly before the release of their first album. The rumours of the new name say that PUP is an acronym for Pathetic Use of Potential take from something said by Babcock’s grandmother.

Their eponymously titled debut album PUP was released late in 2013 and features the singles Dark Days, Guilt Trip, Back Against The Wall. MABU and Reservoir. The latter was accompanied by an insanely gory video which sees the band lacerated, gashed and mortally wounded by their own instruments. The album was nominated for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize.

We wanted to make an album that captured what we do live. We recorded mostly live off the floor and there are a lot of mistakes on the album, but they’re real and awesome, and it sounds like us, playing our songs. That’s all I’ve ever wanted out of a punk rock record.” - Stefan Babcock

The record was promoted by extensive touring in the UK, America and Europe supporting the likes of The Hives and Slaves. The following year they embarked on their first headline tour which culminated in a sold-out concert at Lee’s Palace in Toronto. All in all, they played 450 shows in two years.

The extensive playing took its toll and it was discovered that Babcock had a haemorrhaging cyst directly on his vocal chords and was told that he could never sing again. Despite all their success their dream was over. Defying the doctors, he decided to risk it all and pushed himself and somehow managed to flout the odds.

Taking all their experiences and pouring it into new material for their new album, the band have titled their new album The Dream Is Over. It features the blistering single If This Tour Doesn’t Kill You, I Will which is promoted by yet another insanely gory video. (This band really should branch out in to horror movies).
