An amazing night with Lu

This was an amazing night. I knew it was going to be good, I love the album. I thought it would be a bit moving as I knew there was going to be a bit of story telling about some of the tracks. What I didn't expect was to need a tissue right at the start and leave feeling I'd been through some sore of 'emotional mangle'...…..but in a good way.....The combination of the small venue, music (love the band too) lyrics, stories and footage all 'orchestrated' by Lucinda made for a really special event. We were lucky enough to be chatting to some of the guys from the band afterwards - Big up to Buick 6 by the way - and to then see Lucinda and chat to her as they were all about to head off on the bus to Manchester. That just added to what was already a really memorable night. Hadn't been to the Brighton Dome before, great venue and very pleasant, friendly & helpful staff.

Lucinda Williams, O2 Academy Bristol, Bristol - 28th July 2019

Great gig by Lucinda and her band.

I've seen Lucinda with several of her bands 8 times now. This gig was much better than the last, with the same band, Buick 6, because the last gig was hampered by sound problems. The set list was good, an overview of her entire career. My only disappointment was that she didn't have a keyboard player in the band, but I guess towing around a Hammond organ is prohibitively expensive. Venue staff were welcoming and helpful.

Artist Bio

Lucinda Williams is an award-winning country folk singer. Drawing on rock and blues influences her melancholic story telling can be raw or tempered with her own honky tonk style.

Born on January 26th 1953, Williams showed an affinity for music from an early age and began to pen her own songs at only six years old. By the age of 12 she began to play the guitar and began to play in front of live audiences as a teenager with her friend Clark Jones.

She began playing as a solo artist in her twenties recording and releasing her first album Ramblin’ On My Mind in 1978 followed two years later by her second album Happy Woman Blues.

However, it wasn’t until the release of Lucinda Williams in 1988 that she began to really succeed. Released by the legendary Rough Trade label, the album peaked at Number 39 in the States.

To date she has released thirteen albums such as the ever popular records West, Blessed and Little Honey.

She has won three Grammy Awards out of fifteen nominations including “Best Country Song” for Passionate Kisses in 1993, “Best Contemporary Folk Album” for Car Wheels On The Gravel Road in 1999 and in 2002 she won “Best Female Country Vocal Performance” for the song Get Right With God from the album Essence.

The Ghosts Of Highway 20 was released at the beginning of February 2016. Well produced the music resonates with a warm tone, belying the subject matters the songs explore. With titles like “Bitter Memory”, “If My Love Could Kill” and “Death Came” there is a clear interest in delving into weighty themes. But the songs are resplendent rather than maudlin or self-indulgent.

Embracing a wide range of ideas, the record in blusey, embraces modern rock and a highly developed style of story-telling folk that only comes through true experience.

Rolling Stone gave it 4/5 Stars, describing it as Williams “Grappling with morality on a stark emotionally raw alt-country masterpiece
