One week after hitting the big 5 0, there I was at the Barras and I was watching Kathleen Hanna singing, politicising, dancing and making the crowd go crazy a full 30 years since I first saw her play with Bikini Kill. My partner was with me and hadn’t heard any Le Tigre songs. She loved it! Pop synth punk with attitude the 3 members of Le Tigre swapped instruments, took turns to sing in the microphone, behind them the lyrics sprang up on a big screen and the crowd lapped each catchy, punchy song up with gusto. The same Riot Grrl principles were still there but had evolved to embrace the crowd no matter who she, he, them were. I loved it. I was a Riot Grrl 30 years ago and I felt so alive. The band went through all the favourites, “TKO”, “FYR”, “Keep On Living” and finished off their encore with “Phanta” and one of the best for last , “Deceptacon”. It might have taken a while to be back in Glasgow but Le Tigre left us all enthralled as we left for home.

Le Tigre, Troxy, London - 3rd June 2023
Le Tigre are back, and touring for the first time in 18 years.
The electroclash pioneers - made up of Kathleen Hanna, Johanna Fateman and JD Samson - fuse fiery feminist lyrics with lo-fi beats and punk guitars. Le Tigre formed in the latter years of the 90's, where Hanna was already established as the poster girl of the riot grrl revolution, having fronted seminal band Bikini Kill.
After a short time working under the name Julie Ruin, she recruited JD and Johanna to complete the iconic trio and release their incendiary eponymously titled debut LP, unleashing such feracious anthems as "Decepticon", "Hot Topic" and "My My Metrocard" on the world!
The following years would see them grow from outsider upstarts to mainstream infiltrators, dropping second album Feminist Sweepstakes in 2001, then third record This Island three years later.
